Congratulations to Brett Mays, the 2016
Susan L. Moore Scholarship recipient. 

The CCCBCA Executive Committee established the Susan L. Moore scholarship in the Fall of 2013. This is a $1000 scholarship. There are specific criteria for the recipient of the award.

First is the recipient must have overcome some type of hardship. It could be fighting back from an injury. It could be a personal problem in their life. These are simply examples, not meant to be limiting.

Second, they need to have an outstanding work ethic. Someone who doesn’t need to be pushed to work hard.

Thirdly, they need to have a passion for the game. Someone who you can see the joy when they play.

Lastly, they must be a “team guy”

Brett certainly met the criteria, and with flying colors. Here is what Coach Villarreal had to say:

1. Brett has cared for his mom who has Multiple Sclerosis since he has been 12 years old. Brett’s dad and mom split up when Brett was young and when his mom could no longer take care of herself he began taking care of the household that consists of his sister, mom and himself. Brett would have to help his mom change, go to the restroom and prepare meals for the family while also going to school. When he got out of high school he was going to give up baseball, but his high school coach told him to contact me about continuing to play. Brett came out for out summer baseball class and that’s when his baseball career began to blossom.
2. When Brett was in high school he pitched and played third base as his primary position. After about three weeks in the class it was apparent that there was an inner drive that pushed Brett to succeed. That characteristic landed him a spot on our fall roster that year as a relief pitcher. His bulldog mentality and work ethic earned him a few looks early during his freshman year at GWC and by the end of that year he was starting the OEC Championship clinching game vs. Riverside, which he won.
3. Brett’s passion for the game is what really makes him such a team player. The team loves playing behind him because of his tempo and his bulldog mentality. He has the utmost respect for the game and after every game that he has had an opportunity to pitch in he has always thanked me for the opportunity. I cannot explain how hard this young man has worked to be able to earn scholarship offers to both Cal State Dominguez and Cal State LA, which he is yet to decide on.
4. One more note, while playing at Golden West College he has always maintained a job to help out the situation at home also. I think Brett would be a great representative for this honorable scholarship.
