Roadrunners on the Move

In a year that saw a young team finish second in the Golden Valley Conference and return to post season play, the Roadrunner Baseball team had four sophomores commit to play at the 4 year level.

Braxton Phillips attended Butte College after graduating from Roseville High School in Roseville, CA. Braxton led the Roadrunners in most offensive categories and was named Golden Valley Conference Player of the Year for 2014 after leading the conference in total bases, RBI’s, and Home Runs. Earning First Team Honors, “BP” batted .357 with 5 HR and 35 RBI in 126 at bats. Braxton excelled in the classroom as well capturing GVC All-Academic honors for the 2014 season. Braxton has signed to continue his playing career at Division I University of Central Arkansas.

Drake Richie was a staple in the middle infield, starting every game at second base this season. Drake, a 2012 Oroville High School grad, batted .305 in 2014 with 21 RBI and an on base percentage of .429 while boasting a .960 fielding percentage and turning 27 double plays which led the conference. These numbers earned Drake a Second Team All-Conference nomination as well as GVC All-Defensive honors. Drake adds the cherry to a prosperous season by earning All-Academic Team honors for the Golden Valley Conference. Drake has signed with the Oaks of Menlo College, an NAIA school in Atherton, CA.

Jake Means came to Butte College by way of Reed High School in Reno, NV. Jake finished out his sophomore season with a record of 3-4 with 1 save. Jake sported a 2.53 era in 46.1 innings pitched for the Roadrunners. He tallied 23 strike outs while only allowing 12 free passes (8 walks and 4 HBP) on the year. Jake will continue his athletic career at York College (a NAIA institution in York, Nebraska) under Coach Brian Walth.

Also joining Means in the Midwest is Roadrunner Short Stop, Jake Pott. Jake, a Galt High grad, started every game for Butte College at Short. Batting .282 with a .371 OBP, Pott collected 35 hits and was involved in 21 double plays defensively, a stat that left him in second place in the conference behind fellow Roadrunner Drake Richie. Jake will continue his career for the Wildcats of Culver-Stockton College in Canton, Missouri.

“We are excited and proud of our students who are able to get the opportunity to compete at the next level. Our goal as a coaching staff is to get our players ready to move on to the next level as well as getting them ready to succeed in life. It just doesn’t get any better to earn a college degree and play baseball while doing so,” said Anthony Ferro, Butte College baseball head coach.
