Crazy 8th inning fuels CSM Baseball comeback

JACK McCARTHY GOES 6-FOR-6 TO LEAD CSM’S 3-HR BARAGE IN 8-1 BASEBALL WIN OVER DE ANZA
 
SAN MATEO -- After hitting a single, double, and a home run in his first three at bats, Jack McCarthy was just looking for a triple – for the cycle. All he got however were three more hits for a “perfect” 6-for-6 day as College of San Mateo slugged three homers to defeat De Anza College, 8-1, Monday in a Coast Golden Gate Conference baseball game on the Bulldogs’ all-weather field.
 
McCarthy, a freshman right fielder out of San Juan Hills High School (San Juan Capistrano), raised his team-leading batting average to .444 – No. 4 in Northern California. His slugging average is .605
 
He started the game with his eight double of the year and, following a pair of walks, was brought home by Angelo Bortolin on a fielder’s choice play for San Mateo’s first run.
 
Nick Knecht homered in the second for what proved to be the winning run. Kevin Jordan homered in the third, after Everett Lau had singled, to make it 4-0. McCarthy hit his solo homer (his first of the season) in the fourth.
 
In the fifth inning, after Keolu Ramos singled home Bortolin, Mcarthy singled to center to score Knecht --and it was 7-1. (De Anza had scored its only run in the fourth on a bases loaded walk.) McCarthy singled to right center in the seventh for his third RBI, scoring Ramos with the Bulldogs’ final run.
 
Freshman right hander Sean Prozell (from Carlmont) went 6 2/3 innings, striking out five and walking a pair of runners to improve his season record to 3-1.
 
San Mateo, at 3-1, pulled even in wins with Golden Gate leader Mission (3-0). The Bulldogs are 13-7 overall. De Anza fell to 10-10, 1-3.
 
--The game was originally scheduled to be played at De Anza on Tuesday but was moved up a day to avoid anticipated wet field conditions. CSM returns to action on Thursday (March 15) at Chabot at 2:30 p.m. and will host the same Gladiators on Saturday at 1 p.m.
