Near Perfect Game as Bulldogs Reach 20 Wins -- Within 1 Game of GG Lead: 

 KARALIUS FIRES NO HITTER; ONTAI HAS HR & 6 RBI’S IN 10-0 CSM WIN AT DE ANZA

 

SAN MATEO – Brett Karalius pitched a no hitter and Christian Ontai smashed a home run and two doubles for six RBIs as College of San Mateo closed to within a game of first place in the Coast Golden Gate Conference baseball race with a 10-0 shutout of visiting De Anza College Tuesday afternoon. 

 

Karalius, in his first season start, had a near perfect game. The sophomore righthander out of Pacifica’s Terra Nova High, faced just 28 batters, one over the minimum. He walked one and had ten strikeouts to earn his first decision. 

 

“It’s the first no-hitter by a Bulldog pitcher in my 25 years,” said CSM coach Doug Williams. 

 

San Mateo won its 20th game (20-11) and is 9-4 in the Golden Gate, a game behind Mission -- which lost to West Valley, 11-10, on Tuesday.  CSM had swept co-third place West Valley (8-5) in two games last week and now has a 3-game winning streak. De Anza fell to 5-9 and 10-19-1.

 

Ontai’s 2-run blast in the third inning gave the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead, which is all they needed. But he didn’t let up, doubling home Anthony Flores in the fourth frame and then unleashing a 3-RBI double in the eighth inning to score Flores, Sean Prozell, and Cole Gabrielson for a 9-0 lead. Ontai, a freshman outfielder from Leilehua High School, Wahiawa (Hawaii) then scored the final run on a passed ball.

 

Flores had two hits and scored on each of Ontai’s three hits, while also batting in a run. JJ Ota contributed to San Mateo’s 11-hit attack with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Prozell scored twice and had an RBI.

 

San Mateo plays De Anza again on Thursday, in Cupertino at 2:30 p.m., and then visits co-third Chabot on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Bulldogs have seven league games remaining, including a concluding series with Mission on April 23 and 25.
