June 25th, 2012: SIX 2012 Pirates selected in MLB Draft

COSTA MESA -- The Orange Coast College baseball team managed to do something this week that the states of Hawaii, Delaware, Iowa, Maine, North Dakota and South Dakota could not do -- have six players selected in the 2012 Major League Baseball Draft.

Thanks to a 36-7-1 record and a fourth-place finish in the state, the Pirates led all California community colleges with six (eight total, including two players from the 2009 team). Riverside was the next highest with three (five total), while Cypress had two (four total).

The first two-year player from California selected was OCC's Brandon Brennan, selected in the fourth round (141st overall) by the Chicago White Sox. Brennan finished the 2012 season with an 11-1 record and a microscopic 1.25 ERA. He was a first-team, All-Orange Empire Conference and a first-team, All-State selection. In 108 1/3 innings of work, Brennan fanned 72 batters and allowed just 15 earned runs on just 76 hits. If he doesn't sign, look for Brennan to attend the University of Houston in the fall.

Next to go for the Pirates was outfielder/pitcher Bijan Rademacher, who was selected in the 13th round (404th overall) by the Chicago Cubs. Rademacher was among the state leaders with 49 RBI and finished the year with a .349 batting average, 51 hits, 17 extra-base hits and seven home runs. On the mound, Rademacher was a late-season closer for the Pirates, picking up four saves in five opportunities and 10 strikeouts in eight innings, notching a 1.12 ERA along the way. If he doesn't sign, expect Rademacher to play for Oral Roberts University in the fall.

Sophomore catcher/outfielder Stefan Sabol was selected in the 17th round (530th overall) by the New York Mets. Blessed with size, power and above-average speed, Sabol overcame a preseason broken hand and managed to hit .255 with four home runs and 24 RBI in 2012. In 29 games, he collected 25 hits and scored 28 runs while picking up 11 extra-base hits. If he doesn't sign, expect to see Sabol attend Oklahoma State University in the fall.

In the 20th round (619th overall), freshman outfielder Boog Powell was selected by the Oakland A's. With an uncanny ability to put the ball in play, the speedy Powell led OCC with 76 hits in just 44 games, compiling a .398 batting average, scoring 49 runs while driving in 25. In centerfield, Powell was the defensive leader in the field, ranging all over the outfield to make tough plays seem routine. He was a first-team, all-conference and first-team, all-state selection.

In the 25th round (760th overall), shortstop Joel Licon was selected by the Minnesota Twins. The captain of the infield, Licon finished the 2012 season with a .310 batting average, 43 runs scored, 45 hits, four home runs and 31 RBI. The consummate No. 2 hitter, his 16 sacrifice bunts led the Pirates and helped pave the way for several big innings. He earned second-team, all-conference and first-team, All-Southern California honors for the Pirates. If he doesn't sign, expect Licon to attend Liberty University in the fall.

The sixth player for the 2012 Pirates selected was standout outfielder Chris Carlson in the 33rd round (1,021st overall) by the Boston Red Sox. Despite a smallish frame, the 5-foot-10, 180-pound sophomore left-fielder was the mainstay in the heart of the OCC lineup. He finished with a team-best .421 batting average with seven home runs and 43 RBI. He collected 61 hits (22 extra-base hits), scored 37 runs and even led the team with 11 stolen bases. Carlson was named the Orange Empire Conference Player of the Year at the California Player of the Year as well as the state's Big Stick Award winner. If he doesn't sign, look for Carlson at New Mexico State University in the fall.

In addition to the six players from this year's team, a pair of former Pirates from the 2009 state championship team found their names next to Major League Teams -- infielder Ryan Dunn and pitcher Calvin Drummond.

Dunn, who played for Oregon State during the 2011 and 2012 seasons, was selected in the 17th round (542nd overall) by the Tampa Bay Rays. Dunn batted .286 for the Beavers in 2012, finishing with 19 doubles, seven home runs and 36 runs batted in. He concluded his Oregon State career with 113 games played and batted .283 with 27 doubles, one triple, 11 home runs and 62 RBI.

Drummond, who played for University of San Diego the past two seasons, was selected in the 38th round (1,159th overall) by the Oakland A's. Drummond served as a mainstay in the Toreros weekend rotation. Overall, Drummond posted an 8-6 record with a 3.43 ERA in 86.2 innings of work. Drummond led the team in strikeouts with 80, while holding opponents to a .291 batting average.

Ryan Beal signs National Letter of Intent to attend
Central Connecticut State University

Fremont, CA, May 14, 2012:  Ryan Beal, catcher, has decided to take his swing and catching skills to Connecticut’s Capital Region. Beal will be attending Central Connecticut State University (“CCSU”) in New Britain, CT this fall on a baseball scholarship. After receiving several different offers from schools all over the United States, Ryan chose this Division I program with a promising recruiting class and a winning tradition in CCSU. Fall workouts begin in August and the Blue Devils of CCSU have a standard to maintain. CCSU won the Northeast Conference Championship in 2010 and narrowly missed the title game in 2011.

This year Ryan hit .310 for the Ohlone College Renegades, a junior college in California. In his 46 plate appearances he reached base at a .348 clip. He averaged an RBI for every five plate appearances which led the team. Ohlone won the Coast Pacific Conference Title and then won their Regional before losing in the Super Regional played at San Mateo College. Beal maintained a 4.0 GPA for his freshman year.

Ohlone College head coach, Julian Russell, had this to say about Ryan’s freshman campaign, “Ryan has been a great addition to our program. He works hard every day on and off the field, leads by example and represents Ohlone Baseball with class and respect for the game. We are very excited for Ryan and the tremendous opportunity he has earned to play for Central Connecticut State. He has a bright future ahead and I look forward to seeing him continue to progress throughout his career.”

Originally from Goffstown, NH, Beal played for Goffstown High School and Goffstown Legion. Ryan played on an undefeated JV team as a freshman; he played 3 years of varsity as the starting catcher, was named to the NH All-State Team his senior year, won a NH State Championship in American Legion Baseball, and won a Championship in NH’s premier wooden bat Fall Showcase League. Beal batted over .400 last summer, between high school ball and Legion ball, playing more than 40 games.

Beal chose to come back to New England and play for a perennial winner in Central Connecticut State University. Ryan had this to say about attending CCSU this fall: "I am very excited to continue pursuing my baseball career at the Division I level at Central Connecticut State University. I can't wait to become a part of the program at CCSU and do my best to contribute to the team, and make our way to an NCAA Regional and beyond. I've had a tremendous experience in Fremont, CA at Ohlone College and I feel that my year here from the beginning of fall all the way through the spring has properly prepared me to compete at the next level. I was fortunate enough to be surrounded by a great coaching staff and awesome teammates at Ohlone, making for a great experience in a great program. I'm excited to see what the future holds at CCSU."

May 29th, 2012: Four Road Runners Commit

Four Butte College student athletes: Tyler Molder, Scott Avery, Jake Chappelle and Jacob Angelo have earned baseball scholarships and will transfer to several universities.

"We are excited and proud of our students who are able to get the opportunity to compete at the next level. Our goal as a coaching staff is to get our players ready to move on to the next level as well as getting them ready to succeed in life. It just doesn't get any better to earn a college degree and play baseball while doing so," said Anthony Ferro, Butte College baseball head coach.

Former Viking Lance Breedlove earns All-Big Ten honors at Purdue

Former Long Beach City College standout pitcher Lance Breedlove continued his impressive senior season at Purdue University and was recently named to the postseason All-Big Ten Conference second team.

Breedlove was one of eight Boilermakers to earn all-conference honors after Purdue captured its first Big Ten Conference championship since 1909. Breedlove was the winning pitcher in Purdue's conference-clinching victory after tossing seven innings of one-hit ball on May 12 against the University of Michigan.

Breedlove is a three-time Big Ten Pitcher of the Week winner, the first Boiler to accomplish the feat and the first pitcher in the league to do so since 2009. He did not surrender a run while he was physically on the mound in his four starts at Purdue's Lambert Field this year. He went the distance in his first two Big Ten starts of the year, posting wins against Ohio State and Penn State while becoming the first Boiler to work consecutive complete games since 2009. He struck out a career-high 11 in his season-opening start.

Purdue is currently ranked No. 18 in the nation and is the top seed in this weekend's Big Ten Conference tournament. Breedlove is schedule to start tonight (May 25) in Purdue's second-round game against No. 2 seed Indiana University. Breedlove takes a 7-5 overall record and 3.06 ERA into the contest.

At LBCC, Breedlove earned first-team All-South Coast Conference honors as a sophomore for the Vikings in 2010. He compiled a 2-3 record with a 2.28 ERA in conference action and closed the season with a 2-4 overall record and 3.00 ERA.

May 1st, 2012 - SBCC Wins 6-5 over Canyons in 16.

When Mark Jebbia came to the plate with a runner on second base in the 16th inning of Tuesday's Southern Cal Regional opener, he was just trying to stay calm.

Jebbia drove a single through the left side with two outs, scoring Zach Zehner and propelling SBCC to a 6-5 victory over Canyons at Pershing Park. The WSC North champion Vaqueros were seeded 15th while the Cougars were No. 18.

Jebbia went 4-6 with two RBIs and shortstop Steven Reveles was 3-6 in the longest playoff game and one of the longest in the history of SBCC baseball. It lasted four hours and 42 minutes.

"Whenever I come up in pressure situations, I like to remember that the game stays the same -- you still have to run 90 feet, the pitcher still has to throw it 60 feet, 6 inches," said Jebbia, a 6-4 freshman third baseman from Arcadia. "Pressure is all mental. I just try to relax in those situations."

With one out in the bottom of the 16th, Zehner hit a ball that hopped over the shortstop's head for a single. After a strikeout, Jebbia stroked one through the hole and info left field.
The relay throw hit the Canyons' shortstop in the head, allowing Zehner to sprint home from second base and touch off a wild celebration.

"Longest game of my life, it was a marathon," said Zehner, who was 2-7 and scored three runs. "I knew we were going to win. We put our hearts on the line and we weren't going to fall short."

Danny Nieves started for the Vaqueros, who won their sixth straight to improve to 20-17. SBCC has also won six in a row at home and nine of its last 11 at Pershing Park.

Nieves went six innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts and two walks. Cory Jones, Canyons' starter, was clocked in the 93-94 range on the radar gun. He struck out eight of the first nine batters and finished with 11 strikeouts and seven walks in 4.1 innings.

Danny Nieves Southpaw John Salas relieved Jones with two on and one out after the Vaqueros had scored three to take a 5-3 lead in the fifth. Zehner drove in two with a double to left and Jebbia brought him home on a triple to left-center.

Salas finished the game for Canyons, amassing 11.1 innings, and didn't give up a run until the 16th. He threw 142 pitches, striking out seven and allowing 10 hits.

"That was an unbelievable effort," said Vaquero coach Jeff Walker. "I've never seen anything like that, throwing almost 12 innings and 142 pitches. That was absolutely amazing."

Jake Jelmini tied the game at 5 with a two-run homer to right-center with one out in the seventh.
Rich McCaffrey, normally the Vaqueros' No. 2 starter, came on in relief with two outs in the eighth and turned in a stellar performance. The left-hander pitched 8 1/3  innings of scoreless ball and held the Cougars (20-16-1) to four singles. He struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter.

McCaffrey struck out the side in the 12th and 13th frames, using the minimum 9 pitches in the 13th

"Everything was working today, my fastball -- inside and outside -- curveball and changeup," said McCaffrey, a sophomore left-hander. "All season, I've been a little wild. These last few outings, I decided my stuff is good enough and I'm going to throw right at 'em. If they hit it, they hit it and if they don't, they don't. So far, they haven't hit it."

Santa Barbara, which left 18 runners on base, loaded the bases with one out in the 12th when Jebbia was hit by a pitch, Jared Dinges doubled over the first baseman's head and Eli Michaels was hit on the forearm.

Joey Gonzalez hit into a chopper to third and Canyons turned it into a 5-2-3 double play.

"That was McCaffrey's best performance of the year and it came just four days after he pitched a scoreless seven innings (in a 4-1 win at Oxnard)," noted Walker. "We did a good job of coming back early in the game. Against a guy like Jones, you have to grind it out, get the pitch count up and try to get him out of the game."

"This would have been a tough one to lose. I'm sure glad we were on the right side of this game. This gives us great momentum for the playoffs."

The Vaqueros will play a best-of-3 Regional series this weekend at No. 2 Rio Hondo, the Foothill Conference champion with a 33-3 record. Saturday will be a single game at 1 p.m. and Sunday's action starts at 11 a.m.

April 30th, 2012 - Team of the Week

Moorpark College - Team of the Week

Moorpark College claimed a piece of the WSC Championship with an dramatic, come-from-behind 6-5 win over Allan Hancock College.  The Raiders first lead of the game was at 6-5 in the bottom of the 8th inning when Mark Fitzgerald drove the game-winning run,  his second run of the game with a bases loaded walk.

Kenny Overly had 3 hits, Matty Toczynski had two hits, and was robbed on a hard hit down 3rd base with the bases loaded.  Taylor “The Rifleman” Kahanowitch tied the game with an RBI single.  While it wasn’t Nick Rogowski’s best day at the plate, he made the catch of the year in the 8th inning when he nabbed a shot down the left field line.  Rogowski ran for what seemed an eternity to the Raider faithful.  At the last second, he stretched out and made a diving catch worthy of ESPN top play any day.  To exhibit the full exertion of his catch, his uniform belt buckle snapped on the catch.

Kevin Brown earned the win with 7 1/3 innings of near flawless pitching.  Michael Coates earned the save, coming in with a runner on first and no outs.

Former Head Coach Jerry White and current Head Coach Mario Porto threw out the ceremonial first pitches before the game.  The entire team was recognized for being named the John Keever Character Champion Award winners.  In an unprecedented vote, the full coach8ng staff at MC voted the baseball and men’s track and field team to win this award for their loyalty to Moorpark College.  Beyond that, both teams fought for a WSC title in the season’s final conference event.  This focus on competing at their highest level in the face of being told prior to their season that the program would be suspended was a huge factor in the team vote as opposed to an individual winner, as it has been every other year.  The Character Champion award is the most coveted given by the MC Athletic Department.
